Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a story of a young girl named Cassie who faces racism during the Great Depression. She and her family are black, and in 1933 (when the story takes place) there is resentment against people with darker skin. The Wallace family burns black men, and the Logan family begins a boycott of the Wallace Store. They encourage people to shop at a store in Vicksburg, a neighboring town that treats everyone equally.
